Put a fresh bowl of water in front of your chickens and they'll have a drink. Add a little movement and bubbling to that same water, though, and suddenly it becomes very interesting.
Recently, we added a small water pump to one of our chickens' water bowls to keep the water gently circulating and bubbling.
They absolutely love it.
They were immediately curious about the movement and happily gathered around to drink, which got us wondering: what is it about moving water that chickens find so interesting?
And with another hot Australian summer never too far away, could a simple bubbling water station also be a useful way to encourage our flocks to drink?
Why Are Chickens Interested in Moving Water?
Chickens are naturally curious creatures. Movement catches their attention, whether it's an insect darting through the grass, a leaf blowing across the yard or something unusual happening in their water bowl.
Gently bubbling water provides movement, reflections and sound that a bowl of still water simply doesn't.
Once that curiosity brings them over to investigate, they may be more inclined to have a drink while they're there.
It's also a simple way to add something different to their environment without completely changing their normal routine.
Encouraging Chickens to Drink
Keeping chickens properly hydrated is important all year round, but it becomes particularly important during the warmer months.
Chickens don't sweat like we do. They rely on other methods to regulate their body temperature, including panting and holding their wings away from their bodies. During hot weather, their water requirements can increase significantly.
Water is also essential for digestion, circulation, temperature regulation and egg production.
So anything safe that makes the water bowl a little more appealing and encourages your flock to stop by for a drink is worth considering.
A bubbling water bowl shouldn't replace your chickens' normal access to fresh drinking water, but it can be another water source and a bit of enrichment at the same time.
Our Bubbling Water Setup
Our setup couldn't be much simpler.
We added a small water pump to a water bowl, which keeps the water gently moving and bubbling.
That's it.
No elaborate chicken fountain. No complicated plumbing. Just a simple pump creating movement through the water.
And judging by the reaction from our girls, it's a hit.
If you decide to try something similar, choose a stable container that won't easily tip over and make sure the setup is suitable for use around animals. Any cords or electrical components need to be safely secured and completely inaccessible to curious chickens.
The water should also be deep enough for the pump to operate correctly, while still being appropriate and safe for your flock.
Does Bubbling Water Stay Cleaner?
Here's the catch: moving water doesn't necessarily mean clean water.
A little pump circulates the water. It doesn't magically filter out everything chickens manage to throw into it.
And if you keep chickens, you'll know they have an extraordinary ability to get dirt, food, feathers and all manner of questionable things into a perfectly clean bowl of water.
The bowl still needs to be emptied, cleaned and refilled with fresh water regularly.
The pump needs attention too. Small pumps can accumulate debris and biofilm, so they should be taken apart and cleaned according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Think of the bubbling as enrichment and water movement, not water purification.
It's Enrichment Too
One of the things we love most about keeping chickens is watching them explore.
They scratch.
They peck.
They forage.
They dust bathe.
And they investigate practically anything new that appears in their environment.
Providing safe enrichment gives backyard chickens more opportunities to express these natural behaviours.
And enrichment doesn't have to mean buying expensive chicken toys.
Sometimes something as simple as changing the way their water moves can give them something new to investigate.
Our bubbling water bowl provides movement, sound and another interesting little feature in their environment — while also serving a practical purpose.
That's a win in our books.
A Great Idea for the Australian Summer
As we head towards the warmer months, now is a good time to start thinking about your flock's water setup.
Chickens should always have access to plenty of fresh, clean water, preferably positioned somewhere shaded during hot weather.
Having more than one drinking station can also be useful, particularly with larger flocks or where dominant birds may prevent lower-ranking hens from comfortably accessing a particular drinker.
A bubbling bowl can simply become one of those additional drinking stations.
Keep their regular drinkers available, add the bubbling bowl and see what your chickens think.
Because, as every chicken keeper eventually discovers, chickens have very strong opinions.
Would Your Chickens Love It?
If you're looking for a ridiculously simple enrichment idea for your flock, a gently bubbling water bowl might be worth a try.
We weren't trying to reinvent the chicken drinker.
We simply added a little pump to a bowl of water.
The chickens did the rest.
And watching them happily gather around their own tiny bubbling water fountain has been surprisingly entertaining for us too.
